Why Pilates?
Pilates is a great addition to whatever is it you are doing (or not doing) in your movement and exercise life. Pilates emphasizes the focus on the stabilizing muscles of the body that support those big global muscles. When you train those local, stabilizing muscles to better support your bony alignment, movement is easier! The body feels better!
Pilates has gained fame as an exercise modality for dancers and popular with the ladies. But its so more than that. It was created by this guy named Joseph Pilates (yes! his name was Pilates although he called his method "Contrology") with the idea of connecting the mind and body to achieve a strong body through proper alignment and with rehabilitative movement in mind.
Joe's original movements make up the foundation of his method but it has grown and expanded as we continue to gain knowledge of the human body.
Most of my clients come to me because they have an injury or pain that is keeping them from moving freely and doing all the things they want to do. Pilates is a wonderful and effective way to asses the imbalances in the body and be able to strengthen in an alignment that better serves you.
Want to avoid injury or continue to rehab one that is keeping you from what you love to do? Are you a runner? Pilates. Snowboarding? Pilates. Rock climber? Pilates. Dancer? duh. Pilates.
BUT ALSO! Have you been sitting too much? Desk shoulders? Dead butt syndrome (no seriously, its a thing)? Are you a momma whose body has been in service to her children and is feeling the aches of holding a 30lb ball of joy on your hip? Pilates.
Pilates is often the next step after physical therapy. As a teacher trainer, many of my pilates colleagues were PTs who looking to utilize Pilates in their PT practice. I have been lucky to be able to work with wonderful care providers - PTs, massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, yoga teachers - to provide collaborative care and movement education.
It is a joy for me to help people feel better in their bodies. Movement, all movement is healing.
